Why the percentage you keep falls as you earn more
On KSh 50,000 you keep about 78% of your gross pay. On KSh 200,000 it's about 69%. PAYE is charged in bands: each extra shilling above KSh 32,333 of taxable pay is taxed at 30%, and at higher rates above KSh 500,000.
What's included
- NSSF: 6% of pay up to KSh 108,000, so at most KSh 6,480.
- SHIF: 2.75% of gross pay, minimum KSh 300.
- Housing Levy: 1.5% of gross pay.
- PAYE: worked out after the three deductions above, less personal relief of KSh 2,400.
